Turns out, cheap wedding ideas may have a lasting effect.
In 2014, two economics professors at Emory University conducted a study to find a correlation between the cost of a wedding and the longevity of the marriage. Turns out, according to this study, the pricier the wedding, the shorter the marriage.
Weddings priced more than $20,000, according to the study, had a divorce rate around 1.6 times higher than weddings priced between $1000 and $10,000. The cheaper weddings had lower divorce rates.
In an Oct. 13, 2014 CNN article on the study, “Want a Happy Marriage, Have a Big, Cheap Wedding,” one of the researchers, Professor Hugo M. Mialon, explained his theories behind the study’s results. “It could be the type of couples who have a… (cheap wedding) are the type that are a perfect match for each other,” Mialon said. “Or, it could be that having an inexpensive wedding relieves young couples of financial burdens that may strain their marriage.”
If it helps, replace the word “cheap” with the word, “simple.” Take a look at the Spring 2018 wedding edition of Cowgirls in Style magazine for more simple wedding ideas.
According to the article, “The Biggest Wedding Budget Busters,” published Jan., 2016 by Brides.com, there are clear categories to watch when planning a cheap wedding.

Where should you trim when planning your cheap wedding?
- Party favors. While it’s become trendy and somewhat in-the-norm to offer favors to wedding guests, there’s nothing in Emily Post that says party favors are necessary or an elegant wedding. Save your money for the honeymoon. In the long run, does anyone really care if the candy at the table had your new monogram?
- Guest list. Keep it intimate and elegant with fewer guests. While Prince Wills and Duchess Kate survived the scrutiny of millions, there’s probably some mutual regret their wedding couldn’t have been for close friends and family only. Save your money for a house, a honeymoon or a new couch.
- The dress. If Vera Wang isn’t available to customize your dress, don’t think your wedding is a fail. Some of the simplest weddings gowns have the biggest impact. Not everyone can rock a ballgown. As a bride, you need to feel comfortable, beautiful and happy in your dress choice. Pulling up a strapless gown for 12 hours may not be your idea of happy. Instead, think outside the box. A practical bride might feel better about a dress designed for more than one day.
Whatever you decide, use the information above as proof that a Mariah Carey, diva wedding doesn’t necessarily mean a long, happy life together. If your inclination is to lean towards a simple, country affair for a small group of close friends and family, go for it.
